OUSD officials, students representing cheer, music, sports teams and every school in the district, and representatives from the community were on hand to bid farewell to the “old” Kelly Stadium, and break ground for the renovation of the new facility.
The “new” Kelly Stadium is set to be completed in June 2020. The district awarded the construction contract to Byrom-Davey, Inc. for $18.4 million, well below the $24 million budgeted for the project. When finished, the stadium will have a renovated track and field, new home and visitor restrooms, team rooms, snack bars, a new scoreboard, and seating capacity will increase from roughly 4,000 to 5,000.
During the reconstruction, the Community Foundation of Orange track and field Foundation Games will be on hiatus; Orange, El Modena, Canyon and Villa Park football games will be scheduled as away games; graduation ceremonies will be slated elsewhere. The fate of Orange’s Third of July fete has yet to be determined.
