David Cortez, El Modena Historian, passed away on March 12, alone at his home in El Modena. He was 75 years of age. He had lived his entire life in El Modena, and was a member of the Orange High School graduating class of 1962.
David attended Fullerton Junior College and was drafted into the Army in 1964, serving a two-year term in Germany. After the Army, he went to work as a senior machinist for ITT Cannon in Santa Ana, working the second shift.
It was during the day that he chronicled as much history of El Modena and its residents as he could gather. He would attend as many funerals as he could, interviewing countless people, keeping accurate notes and saving them for future generations.
His dream was to convert his old family house at the intersection of Hewes and Spring Streets into a museum. He planned to showcase mementos, photos, family histories, artifacts and other items from days gone by.
He was, as a result of his tireless research and archiving, the unofficial historian for the El Modena community.
David never married, and leaves three sisters and one brother. Services are pending.
